Celebration for the Quileute Nation

June 2nd, 2009 by Mike

James Island at SunsetThis morning the Twilight Lexicon reported that the Quileute Nation hired a new PR person to handle all of the extra attention and tourism the tribe has seen with the success of the Twilight saga.

The tribe is excited about the extra attention and hopes to share with people from all over the world more about its culture and history.

However, what’s even more exciting about this day is that it also celebrates the anniversary of when Native American’s were given U.S. citizenship. On this day in 1924 Calvin Coolidge signed the Indian Citizenship Act which recognized Native American’s as U.S. citizens.

It just goes to show how far our nation has come. A nation that once oppressed these people now writes about them in popular fiction and brings new life to the history and culture of an ancient tribe. And while the Quileute’s never had a treaty with the “cold ones” there is definitely a lot of history to be told of this tribe, including legends of being decedents of wolves.
