New Twilight Inspired Music From Crestfallen

September 21st, 2009 by Mike

Crestfallen - In LoveLast Thursday Orange County alt rock band Crestfallen released their brand new Twilight inspired single “In Love”.  The melodic new track explores the early conflict of Bella and Edward’s relationship and Edward’s struggle to control his hunger for the girl he loves more than anything.

A strong melody, singer Nick Bourland’s falsetto ridden chorus, and ethereal distant sounding electric guitar give this song a very haunting feeling, which I felt was fitting for a Twilight inspired song.

I was fortunate enough to ask Nick Bourland, lead singer of the band, about “In Love” and Twilight in a recent e-mail interview.

What specifically inspired this song?  Was there a specific book or moment in the Twilight Saga that made you write this song, or were you inspired by Twilight in general?

The larger inspiration for the song really comes from what I think attracted most people to the series – the miserable bliss of Bella and Edward’s relationship.  The line from the series that really got me thinking about this was in the first book when Edward says he doesn’t want to be a monster.  He recognizes what he is and yet he strives to master it to be with the one he loves.

Do you plan to write more Twilight inspired music, or is this a one time thing?

Another Twilight inspired tune is definitely a possibility.  The tone of the series definitely lends itself to my writing style and there is so much to pull from, but I won’t force it – if it comes, it comes.  I am kicking around the idea of a song from Jacob’s perspective.  I think there’s alot there that people can relate to.

As a fan of the Twilight Saga do you find other men giving you a hard time about it?  What did your bandmates think of the Twilight inspired song?

Not at all…what they say when I’m not around – who knows?  I think a number of guys I know have considered giving it a chance because they know me and see how much I love it.  My bandmates are all about it as far as I can tell.  All they really care is – is it a good song?  They’re all really pleased with how the song turned out so I think we’re all in agreement that it’s a good thing.

Have you read the entire Twilight Saga?  If yes, do you have a favorite book?  If no what books have you read?

I’ve read all of them…even the partial draft of Midnight Sun on Stephenie’s website.  Picking a favorite is really hard because there are things about each that I really love.  If I had to pick, I would probably pick Twilight because the way Bella and Edward’s relationship progresses is done really well.  They both always say just abit more than they should but never let the whole thing out until much later.  I especially like the lines that show the contrast between what they think and what they actually say – I think we all edit ourselves like that.

The three of us at Where’s Edward have made our own personal soundtrack for the books. Do you have any songs that make you think of the Twilight Saga?

Oddly enough, not in particular.  I prefer to read in silence so I can really soak it all in.  I do, however, think rather cinematically when I read.  I remember reading Twilight for the first time and getting very vivid pictures of what all these people looked like, sounded like, etc.  I’m happy to say that, for the most part, the movie was faithful to what I saw and heard – ignoring the bits of “creative license” in the screenplay, of course.

Team Edward or Team Jacob, and why?

I’m about 80% Team Edward.  He is, of course, the hero of sorts that we’re supposed to cheer for throughout the story, so it’s easy to get sucked into that and just happily play along.  In terms of personality, I’m actually a great deal like Edward, so it’s easy for me to relate to him.  On the other hand, I can’t help but feel badly for Jacob.  He dutifully follows Bella around like a little puppy (yes, I’m making a joke) and constantly puts himself in danger for her, only to have his affections unreturned.  He also possesses a certain self-loathing wit that I really appreciate.  In the end, though, he has some really big “I’m a jerk” moments that really make Edward stand out as the more honorable man.
