Angel vs. Edward: Joss Whedon Weighs In On Twilight
Before there was Edward and Bella, there was another vampire romance that swept the nation, Buffy and Angel. As a die hard Buffy and Angel fan, it’s hard to believe that it’s been over 5 years since my beloved Buffyverse met its untimely demise, with Buffy the Vampire Slayer being cancelled in May of 2003 and Angel in May of 2004. Yet here I am years later wrapped up in a whole other vampire world completely unlike the world I once knew, a world where vampires could be dusted by a single teenage girl has now become a world where vampires are essentially indestructible. So when I found out that the creator of my old vampire world weighed in on my new vampire world I was ecstatic!
Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and a number of other amazing shows I have come to love (Firefly, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, Dollhouse) recently weighed in on the Twilight saga in a very candid interview with MTV. In the interview Whedon not only discusses how the forbidden love between a vampire and an otherwise normal girl sounded just as crazy to him when he was creating Buffy and Angel as it does now with Edward and Bella, he goes on to say that while Robert Pattinson is cool, “Angel would kick the shit out of him.” Kristina, and a number of other Twi-hards are sure to get their panties in a twist over this one, but before you do let’s look at what he said.
First, if you’re going off the direct quote, Whedon said, “I think Robert Pattinson is really cool. Angel would kick the shit out of him.” Based on that statement alone he is basically saying that Angel would kick the shit out of Robert Pattinson, which in that case I would say is 100% accurate. However he then flip flops a bit and starts comparing Angel and Edward, “He’s Angelus, there’s no Edward Cullunus” He then goes on to make a crack about the fact that all Edward does is sparkle in the sun. Sadly, this is where Kristina’s argument gets the upper hand.
In a bout between Edward Cullen and Angel without any leveling of the playing field, Edward Cullen would win based on the fact that he is for all intensive purposes invincible, whereas Angel can be staked, thrown into the sun, etc. However, you level the playing field and throw Edward Cullen into the Buffyverse as nothing more than your typical vamp and he’d lose in a heartbeat based on Angel’s fighting skills, strength, and fact the entire Scooby Gang was by his side. Plus we already know based on the Buffy vs Edward video that Buffy alone could dust Edward.
I think it’s great that some of my favorite people in entertainment are coming out and giving their input on the Twilight phenomenon, first Kevin Smith weighed in on Twilight and now Joss Whedon. What are your thoughts? Who would win in a bout between Angel and Edward?

I think Edward is leaps and bounds above Angel. There is no comparison in my eyes.

i don’t know angel so i can’t really contribute
but aside from not being staked, being able to go into the sun and being pretty well invincible… Edward can run really fast
so Angel likely wouldn’t be able to catch him for hand on hand combat

Jac Star, this is exactly why I brought up leveling the playing field. If we bring Edward into the Buffyverse and strip him of all the special vamp traits Stephenie gave him, the only thing he’d have going for him is the mind reading. But I agree 100% that as is, Edward would destroy Angel in seconds based on his powers and his invincibility.

Please, its just stupid! If Edward met Angel in a fight he would die, and so would Emmet, Jasper, Alice and Rosalie. Even Carlisle and Esme. If they fought Angel would have Willow and Buffy at hes side, Willow probably would kill them very easy or just freeze theme or set them on fire. Then Angel and Buffy would tear theme apart. Thats my opinion. None of the cullens have the ability to take the chars in buffyverse down! Sorry.

It would be a pretty good fight. One-on-one, i’d have to say Angel. He spent 300 years fighting and came out victorious every time. He’s been to hell and back, literally. And dont LET him lose his soul because Angelus would rip him apart. Pretty boy Edward doesn’t have anything on him. Don’t get me wrong Angel would probably take a pretty bad beating but Edward just doesn’t have that killer instinct.

I love that some of the die hard Buffy and Angel fans came out of the woodworks to defend their beloved Angelus. Again, I come from the Buffyverse originally and will always have a love for Angel and Spike even. I just recognize the reality of the matter and being from two different worlds with two different sets of strengths and weaknesses Angel is significantly disadvantaged when you compare the two.
@JacStar if you dropped Angel, as is, into the Cullen world and plot Edward against Angel, I believe Edward would win. With his super speed he could easily maneuver around Angel and simply stake him in the heart and dust him pretty quickly. This was the point I was trying to make originally in the post. Because Edward is essentially invincible when it comes to hand to hand combat, weaponry, etc. Angel doesn’t really have any sort of advantage.
@Danny Brown OK First of all are we talking Bewitched with the original Darren or Bewitched after the switch? Or are we looking at Bewitched with Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell? LOL J/K I don’t know enough about either series to give a good comparison of the two. Not to mention I think in both cases the witches on each of the shows simply used their spells to alter situations or fix mess ups. There wasn’t a lot of fighting going on with their magic. If we want to go down that road we’d have to investigate witches like “The Charmed Ones” from Charmed. Again though, in that case would we be looking at Charmed with Shannon Daugherty or Charmed with Rose McGowan? I have always been partial to the McGowan episodes myself.
So to answer your question Danny…I’ve got nothin’.

but nothing beats Edward
so then when you drop Edward in the Buffyverse are you giving him the same strengths and weaknesses as Angel? you know, death by stake, and not as quick?

If you have seen Angel, you know he is as quick as Edward.. He runs up buildings, he jumps down from them, and he even jumps up very high to.. Suddenly, he is in one place, and suddenly gone.. The speed between Angel and Edward is the same.. Only they dont show Angel running up hills and climbing trees:) You know! He can do that to, easy! Just reed Angel season six /After the fall! So they fight so they fight one to one.. Angel with hes centuries of experience would take Edward down.. Sorry.

@Simror, you may be right. Though I never pictured Angels speed as being as fast as Edwards. It’s been a few years though, so maybe I’ll need to re-watch some of my seasons of Angel or Buffy even. I will say however that again, that the fact that Edward is for all intensive purposes invincible I still don’t know that Angel would be a match for him even with speed. Believe me though, I want to agree with you. I was a Buffy and Angel fan LONG before I was a Twilight fan.

Suck out his sole, and suddenly angel becomes pretty much the biggest badass ever. He gets it hand down.
And given that it’s been proven he can act like angelus(was done for a brief stint in s3) when he’s angel…
He’d tear eddy-poo apart.

Are you kidding me?!?! There is absolutely NO competition between Angel and Edward, Angel would win with his hands tied behind his back and blindfolded. There’s actually substance in Angel, Twilight is just made for the screaming fangirls who just wants to see naked boys.
Also, has no one considered the fact that Edward goes weak at the knees around Bella, while Angel can actually suck it up like a man and live without Buffy?

Well, after the latest developments in the Buffyverse, Angel can fly faster than a speeding bullet, is invincible and glows. So he can take out the Cullens in their verse also.

There is no comparison whatsoever between the two cause’ Angel will win in a fight situation and any other situations….

Ok, read the comics please before comparing.
Both Angel AND Buffy are still going on, the story has not ended. Buffy Season 8 is ongoing, as well as Angel “After the Fall”.
Buffy and Angel get LEAPS and BOUNDS beyond what they were in the shows, mainly because they couldn’t afford the special effects in the shows to display what Joss Whedon had originally intended.
Examples are both Buffy and Angel can fly. Angel is the Villain known as “Twilight” who was recently unmasked (Buffy season 8 takes places years after Angel and Buffy ended). Angel can be in daylight too. They both can glow, when around each other.
They also have super strength and speed on Super Hero level, not just superhuman like on tv show and Twilight books/movies.
If you read on and see some of the crazy things they can do now, there is legit ZERO comparison here. Angel as ‘Twilight” character took out “Super Buffy” and another Slayer at same time, hes crazy stronger.
Angel is even beyond “Uber-Angel” as he was dubbed in series finale. This is the Angel after feeding on Hamiliton, he gain physical abilities beyond any character in both TV shows runs, including Illyria and Buffy.
If you want to think Edward is better(god forbid anyone would think that pale imitation of Angel was better than the original) than go ahead, but don’t be naive and think he can beat Angel or Angelus in a fight.
Its like people who think Batman is cooler/better than Superman, but they are intelligent enough to admit that Superman(who can move planets) would flick Batman’s head off in speeds beyond light.
That the same thing here. Like Edward better(*gags*) if you must, but don’t make yourself out to be a fool by trying to say he’d win a fight he can’t. Research and read the Buffy/Angel Canonical(official-Joss Whedon is involved in the writing) comic continuations as well to get a better jist of their abilities.

This particular thread, displays the ripoffs of Tilight’s Edward to Angel while also explaining how much of a weaker character Edward is to Angel as well as touching on how people often compare Twilight movie/books to Angel TV series, but never think to read the comics beyond the show, which show how powerful the characters truly are. Edward is barely a vampire. Angel is a champion. Angel has been to hell and back – Angel has fought and killed numerous demons. All Edward has ever killed is a bunch of mountain lions. The closest thing to talent that Edward has is mind-reading – but newsflash, Cullen! Angel’s thoughts don’t reflect, in case you didn’t know that!

Edward is a vampire? Could have fooled me. Angel is a real vampire – he burns in the sun, you can kill him with a stake to the heart, he can’t touch crosses, he has to be invited into a home, and oh yeah, he has FANGS. Angel is trained in combat, he’s really fast, he has super reflexes, etc. And if we’re going to base them on looks, well I’d rather have the dark, dangerous, brooding vampire than the glittering stalker.

HE’S GORGEOUS. And to top it off, he has a vampire face and FANGS. How inconvenient of Stephanie Meyer to make Edward GLITTER. NOT. Even with his vampire face, Angel’s hot.
