Kevin Smith Weighs In on Twilight and ComicCon
When you think of glittery vampires, forbidden love, and hordes of screaming teens, the last name to come to mind is Kevin Smith. The director and screenwriter who’s famous for films like Clerks, Mallrats, and Dogma, to name a few, is known for making cracks at almost everyone and everything, including his own work. So when you think of the opportunity to make some wise cracks about a teen phenomena featuring a sparkly vampire you’d think he’d be all for it. And while he has made comments in jest surrounding the events at this years Comic-Con, he has for the most part been fairly supportive of the series on Twitter lately.
I’ve put together the Kevin Smith Twilight Anthology below for your enjoyment, and while not all of it screams support for the film, it at least shows that even a guy like Kevin Smith can get behind this unorthodox piece of vampire fiction. In fact he throws in a few pro’s as to why the typical Comic-Con fanboy should appreciate the series and the craze at Comic-Con.

Smith went silent like his big screen alter ego, Silent Bob, on the subject of Twilight with a retweet from BC musician and blogger Davin Dobson, “You’re now officially old. I’m calling it: 10PM on July 25th, 2009.” Smith followed the retweet in saying, “That was really funny, man. I now go silent on TWILIGHT.”
However, the Twilight talk didn’t end there. Following an array of boos and whiny fanboys, Smith spent about two and a half minutes during his panel at Comic-Con discussing the New Moon clips that were premiered during this years event. The clip is in typical Smith fashion and includes some bad words as well as some light jabs at the film itself, so if you’re offended by that kind of thing I wouldn’t watch it.
While Smith hasn’t read the books, he clearly supports them in some fashion or another by defending the series as well as it’s fans in these tweets. As a man who is seen as a God to many geeks and a hero to many fanboys, I think it goes to show that if someone like Kevin Smith can support it there’s no reason why any other guy on the planet shouldn’t be able to as well.
Interestingly enough, this isn’t the first time Kevin Smith has chimed in on the Twilight craze. Earlier this year both Smith and his daughter spoke out on the Twilight film during an interview with MTV. And while he agreed that it wasn’t really his type of film, he did feel it was a well made film with good acting.
Sadly, I don’t think Smith’s endorsement of the Twilight books or films will be enough to convert the die hard geek, but hopefully it’s enough to show that not all male supporters of the series are as pathetic as other men make us out to be. However, when I look at Smith in comparison to myself, it may imply that male supporters of the series are all in fact overweight, white males, with facial hair. Dammit…

Kevin Smith is a genius and i’m glad he’s giving the series/movies a chance. he could be like many others and just shut it down without even knowing half of what it’s about

Jac Star, What I like about Kevin Smith’s point of view through all of this is that a) he recognizes that it wasn’t a film made for people like him, but he sees the quality in it for the target audience and b) he recognizes the value of the books and that if it gets people reading and talking, where is the harm.
The fact of he matter is a fanboy at Comic-Con who rips on a Twilighter is no better than anyone else out there that might rip on a comic book geek, gamer, or any other subculture you can think of. I think it’s kind of ironic really.

I am not a 14 year old girl dammit! I torture my hubby with the movie/books/talk. It has only started! Its good to see Mr. Smith supporting it. (I think it has alot to do with the fact that his daughter loves it though.)

Hehe I’m sure his daughter loving it helps!
But I enjoy that he seems to give it a fair shake. I don’t mind people not seeing what I do in the series but I hate it when they try to tear it apart for ridiculous reasons.
I like Kevin’s take on it “It’s not my thing but it’s good for them!”
Hehe
